Arc reactor update

The ironman Arc reactor is giving me some trouble, the pieces are so small and the magian for error i so slight im having trouble getting my molds the right exact size. i have not got to the stage were i can make working molds but my skill with making the pieces to mold hasn't progressed as fast and until i catch it up this will be stuck half done.

The set

I decided on a room for my FMP, i went down and photographed it and measured it. I have now got the sizes for all the set coverings

with all the measurements i can work out what crane movements are possible and can start making all the 3D models to fit. also with the photo references i can decide on the final layout of every physical prop and set piece.

There are two sinks in the room but they are designed to have panneld sides so it will be easy to box them in and make them more fitting for my scean.

Iron man mask Defect

My Ironman mask is at the final stage before painting and something went a bit wrong. when the sealant dried it cracked the mask. this will only set me back a little, i will fill all the cracks and sand the surface down and it will be practically invisible before i paint it. After painting the will be no evidence of it other then this blog, next time i will layer the sealant on with more finner layers rather then a couple of think ones.

Next mask

The iron man mask is almost done, the next mask on the list is the predator mask. I have worked out a template for the general shape of the mask and the rest i will sculpt by hand.

In Predator 2 they showed an alien skull in the background of one of the shots im doing the revers with the predator mask (except no aliens).

Picking apart film

On a mission to ruin every film for myself by picking apart the magic. started with the behind the scene of films i have seen then i rote down all the films that there effects were "inspired" from and looked up those pulling apart how they were all made and following the effects back to find there original simplest form.

This also involved spending a lot of time in the library as well it was hard at first o find what i needed and the library computer system isn't that help full and if your dyslexic or just have a problem with spelling its a giant pain. Now if Im not reading something specific i just go to one of the sections relating to what i do in general and just pic a book off the shelf. I also have a interest in sitting in on some of the films studies electives if i can. I have started trying to right a review of films i watch to help me be more critical in my work, Im compiling them on my new privet blog and will start putting them on here when Im happy with them.

Looking at Worth 1000

For those who don't know "Worth 1000" is a website for image manipulation and contests mainly using photoshop or equivalent programs.

They have theamed compertitions and list the winners in order of quality. some are amazing for ther consepts and others for the way they are made.

Screen Interface research continues

I have continued looking at screens from films the following images are from "the crocodile hunter movie"

In my reserch i also realised i wasnt considering PDAs so i had a look at everything from iphones to Star trek data pads, which are shockingly similar lol.

The prequel StarTrek material had the most relevant PDAs. I will be making some physical tests to see if the PDAs would be easier hand made.

I found out that in "the world of trek" the interface you see is called LCARS wich stands for Library Computer Access/Retrieval System. this might be the kind of style i make mine.

Machinima

I am working on a Machinima project for my portfolio and hopfully for an upcoming Machinima compatition. i have been looking at videos on Youtube and one stood out above the others.

Knowing the restrictions of WOW makes me appreciate this video more and after some research i have found out how it was all done with a use of programs i didn't even know existed, most of the things i learned how to do i dont need for the Machinima thing im doing but as soon as its finished i will start another one to try them all out.

Ironman props

I have finished the prototyp mask and have made a paper model version of the arc reactor. from the paper modle i can make the clay parts to use for creating molds. the final pieces will be made in clear plastic and plaster.

The final Arc reactor will have LEDs fitted to it so it will have an actual light that i can extend with digital light.

I made a 3D version to help me work out how the parts would fit together. there is no more work to do except the physical creation.

Eureka

I have been watch Eureka for my FMP because it not only fits with the style and the concept but also the techniques im using to accomplish it.

WIKI: "Eureka is an American science fiction television series set in a town inhabited almost entirely by geniuses"

One of the main things i started watching Eureka for was the computers and the things happening on screen. There is a wide range of computers in Eureka usually standard monitors "pimped out". most monitors you get to see without ther being a reason for you to be looking at it only have a office for windows on them.

Another thing that is really useful is the constant use of set extensions.

Computers

I have been putting a lot of thought into the computers that will be in my FMP, originally i had mocked up a couple of designs that were close enough to computers to be recognized but had a minimalist, abstract style to make them more futuristic. I spent some time looking at the future of real computer ideas like flexible screens and holographic interactive displays then i looked at computers used in films.

Arizona State University’s Flexible Display Centers prototype in association with HP.

I liked the way the computers in "Ironman" were done, not necessarily futuristic at all but nice and clerical, also the environment there in was not futuristically/ customary furnished this fits with the style i want perfectly.

Odd that Tony Starks servers are made by Dell but never mind.

For the design of what actuary going on the screen iv been looking into the professionals that make the interfaces for film like Mark Coleran who made futuristic screens and UI designs for The Bourne Ultimatum, Children of Men, Mission Impossible 3, The Island, The Bourne Identity, Tomb Raider, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and other films.
